Urban Gymnastics & GymFlow Tumbling

Flip 2 It Sports Center exists to develop confident, healthy, responsible children in our community. We will teach proper skill development in a safe environment. We want all involved with Urban Gymnastics & GymFlow to embrace the journey while having fun with physical fitness and enjoying the learning process.

WHAT IS URBAN GYMNASTICS?

Urban gymnastics is a non-competitive physical discipline in which participants run along a route attempting to negotiate obstacles and other challenging situations in the most efficient way possible, using skills such as Jumping, Strength, Flexibility, Gymnastics, Tumbling, Break dance moves, climbing and your mind. The objective is to get from one place to another using only the human body and the objects in the URBAN Gymnastics environment.

WHAT IS GYMFLOW?

GymFlow is a Tumbling class (TNT) specially designed and geared towards our Urban Gymnastics students. It teaches the proper technique and proper drills to learn how to tumble and travel through the air in a safe way. (The USAG way)

My kid wants to do Parkour! What is the difference between Urban Gymnastics and Parkour?

For starters URBAN Gymnastics is held in a SAFE environment. Flip 2 It's Urban Gymnastics environment focuses on keeping our students safe with equipment that have been designed to safely teach skill progression. Our staff is USAG safety certified, CPR and FIRST AID trained, GYMCERT certified as well as members of USAG and AAU.

What is progression?

URBAN Gymnastics is taught through proper skill progression with specific skills associated with each level and age group. This progression allows us to provide a safe, structured learning environment for our students.

Using research on children’s learning, learning progressions can be identified that trace the path that children might follow as instruction helps them move from naïve ideas to more sophisticated understanding. http://www.pearsonassessments.com/NR/rdonlyres/6C8F4D6F-EFB1-47CE-9247-3712D274190F/0/Bulletin_12.pdf

Beginning Urban Gymnastic techniques; if you don't know what these are check out the skills below. We practice rolls and vaults on both sides. You'll find that you have a dominant side and it's tempting to only use that side for techniques, but Urban Gymnastics requires being prepared for any obstacle, which requires proficiency on both sides of your body.

• Rolls • Balance • Running • Jumping (standing, running, short, long, and precision) • Quadrapedal Movement • Cat Hangs and Leaps • Safety Vault • Turn Vault • Lazy Vaults • Wall pass

Rolls: critical for the health of your joints, to protect yourself on higher jumps, and to keep momentum coming out of drops and jumps. Learn to roll to both sides, backwards and forwards.

Running: learn to run on the balls of your feet. This will make you faster both running and transitioning into other techniques. Most Urban Gymnastic runs consist of constant running with other techniques associated as you meet obstacles. Interval training is the best way to improve running condition. Look into sprints, running drills, and other running techniques.

The Vaults: adapt the vault to the environment, don't try do adapt the environment for the perfect vault. When doing vaults, position yourself to transition quickly into and out of them. You want to land softly (a quiet landing is a good landing), usually one foot in front of the other so you can continue running. The transitions are as important as the techniques themselves.

All Urban Gymnastics, GymFlow activities and events are held in a controlled setting using a typical Gymnastics environment which includes the traditional six men's apparatus, the traditional Gymnastics Woman apparatus as well as Stall Bars, Cargo nets, Trampolines, Tumbletracks and more, National Gymnastics equipment such as; spotting blocks, stacked mats, and adaptive equipment are also used so long as they are manufactured by an industry recognize company and in excellent working condition. We do not build our own equipment. Our equipment is purchased from reputable manufactures who specialize in the gymnastics industry.
